THE DESKTOP EDITION • UPDATED FOR FIRST-TIME SETUP

A steady start beats a rushed one.

Ledger Live is a companion application for managing supported crypto accounts with a Ledger hardware wallet. The app displays balances and helps prepare transactions; the connected device is where you review and approve them. This distinction matters: a desktop screen is convenient, but your device is the final checkpoint.

This walkthrough covers the basics without assuming you know the jargon. Take it one step at a time, use only official Ledger channels for downloads and support, and pause whenever something looks unexpected. Crypto transactions are generally irreversible, and this guide is educational—not financial advice or a substitute for current product documentation.

01

Before you begin: prepare your workspace

Start with a computer you control, a reliable internet connection, and your Ledger hardware wallet. If the device is new, keep its packaging and follow the in-box instructions. If it was already initialized, only you should know its PIN and recovery phrase. Never use a phrase supplied by another person, printed in a guide, or pre-filled on a device.

Choose a quiet moment. Avoid public Wi-Fi when practical, close unfamiliar pop-ups, and do not let anyone remotely control your computer. Make sure the operating system is up to date. Ledger Live is a portfolio interface—not a place to reveal secrets. No setup step should require you to type your recovery phrase into the desktop app, a website, or a support conversation.

02

Install the desktop app from the source

Navigate directly to Ledger’s official Ledger Live page by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Follow its current download instructions for your operating system. Do not use sponsored search results, unsolicited download links, file-sharing sites, or links in direct messages. Look carefully at the domain before downloading; lookalike pages can imitate product branding convincingly.

Open the installer you obtained from the official source and follow the operating system’s prompts. If your computer warns that an application cannot be verified, stop and consult Ledger’s current support documentation rather than bypassing protections. Launch Ledger Live when installation finishes. If the app offers an update, review that it came through the expected official flow before proceeding.

03

Set up and verify your hardware wallet

Connect your device using a compatible cable, then follow the on-device prompts and the app’s setup instructions. A new device generally guides you through creating a PIN and generating a recovery phrase. Write the words down in the order shown and store them offline in a private, secure place. Anyone with that phrase may be able to control the associated assets. Never photograph it, save it in cloud storage, paste it into a password manager, or share it.

Use the device’s authenticity or genuine-check flow when prompted, following Ledger’s current official instructions. Read prompts on the hardware wallet itself. Your PIN protects local access to the device; it is not your recovery phrase. If a device arrives preconfigured, asks you to use a phrase someone else gave you, or behaves differently than expected, do not deposit funds—contact official support through the verified website.

Your recovery phrase is the master backup. Keep it offline, private, and out of every app and website.

THE ONE RULE WORTH MEMORIZING
04

Add an account and understand what you see

Ledger Live supports different crypto networks and assets, and availability can depend on your region, operating system, app version, and device. Use the app’s current account or asset workflow to add an account for a network you intend to use. Follow its directions to open the relevant app on your hardware wallet and connect when asked. The device may need a compatible app installed before an account can be added.

Once synchronized, your account view may show a balance, transaction history, and network details. Market values are estimates and can change quickly; they are not guaranteed sale proceeds. An account entry is a way to view activity on a public blockchain, not a deposit held by Ledger. Take time to learn the network name and address format before using an asset. Never assume two networks are interchangeable simply because their tokens share a name.

05

Receive first; send only after checking

To receive, choose the correct account and use the app’s receive flow. Confirm the displayed address on the hardware wallet screen before sharing it; the device screen is the trusted reference. Check that the sender will use the same network and asset. When you are new, a small test transfer can help you understand the process, though network fees and minimums may apply and no transfer is risk-free.

To send, select the right asset and account, then enter the recipient and amount carefully. Verify the full address and network on the hardware wallet display. Review the fee, amount, and destination on-device before approving. Reject a transaction if details differ from what you intended. Approval authorizes a blockchain transaction; it may not be reversible. Never approve a request you did not initiate, and do not share your screen while entering sensitive information.

06

Keep the simple security habits

Install app and firmware updates only through official Ledger channels, and read the instructions before confirming an update. Keep your recovery phrase separate from your device and computer. Protect your PIN from onlookers. Check URLs, sender identities, and transaction details every time; scammers create urgency to make careful people skip checks. Ledger Support will not ask for your recovery phrase, and no website should need it to “synchronize,” “validate,” or “unlock” your wallet.

If you suspect your phrase has been exposed, treat it as compromised. Do not enter it into a website or ask a stranger to “secure” the funds. Consult verified Ledger support documentation from a clean device and seek qualified help. If the app or device presents a warning you do not understand, pause rather than clicking through. A delay is usually safer than an irreversible approval.
